There’s a changing of the guard in the White House.
Joe Biden’s inauguration brought with it more than just a new POTUS and a re-joined Paris Agreement. The Trump clan have made way for a new guard of effortlessly cool millenials in the form of the Biden grandchildren who were at the sartorial forefront of the new regime.
And, praise be, there wasn’t a nude patent court shoe in sight. Gone are the Stepford Wives of the Trump era, clad in questionable peplums and pencil skirts; this new crowd is daring, stylish and self-possessed, bold in their fashion statements and earning a tidal wave of Instagram kudos along the way. So who are the new 18-30s kicking off Biden’s new – and cool – White House?
Maisy Biden, the 20 year old daughter of Hunter and Kathleen Biden, best friend of Sasha Obama and Tiktokker (she’s @scoobeydoobey) led the charge in departing from previous White House fashion in Nike high-tops and a floral Rodarte dress.
Trainers? To an inauguration event? Yes – and Maisy wasn’t the only one. Sneakers were spotted throughout Wednesday’s events, with a member of Kamala Harris’s family opting for Dior Air Jordan 1s, signalling a youthfulness that wasn’t seen in Trump’s White House even amongst actual children (Barron Trump, please put away the varsity jackets and ill-fitting suits).
And whilst 20 year old Finnegan (or ‘Finn’ as she is known amongst the Bidens) is currently studying at the University of Pennsylvania and keeping a relatively low profile, 16 year old Natalie –daughter of the late Beau Biden – is set to become the teenage it girl of the White House after growing up in the spotlight next to her grandfather.
Both opted for low-cut sequinned cocktail dresses designed by Markarian, who also created Jill Biden’s inauguration day look, and which despite being both revealing and sparkly were far from tacky. The ethos of the NYC-based brand is to create whimsical and playful yet practical and wearable pieces, which neatly sums up both the Bidens’ approach to inauguration style and their political personas.
And continuing the bold monochromatic theme that everyone from Jill Biden to J-Lo adopted for the swearing in ceremony (complete with matching masks, no less), was Naomi Biden, the 26 year old Columbia law graduate and the only Biden grandchild with a public Instagram account, in an all-fuchsia gown and shoes.
But the standout sartorial choice came from Biden’s daughter herself, activist and philanthropist Ashley, who went for a Ralph Lauren tux and open bow tie. The laid-back look signifies more than just a penchant for smart tailoring and a flattering cigarette pant – it’s a pointed end to the male, pale and stale crew that loitered behind Trump throughout his presidency. The suit remains – but its wearer has most definitely changed.
And that can only be a good thing.
