Why North West Held Up a “Stop” Sign During the Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion Show

While attending Paris Fashion Week with her mom Kim Kardashian, North West used the opportunity to make both a fashion statement and a literal one.

During the Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Fall 2022 show on Wednesday, while sitting in the front row alongside her mom, North held up a piece of white paper to the photographer pit upon which she’d written the word “Stop.” The next day, Kim shared a carousel of photos from their joint public appearance on her Instagram account, concluding with a video of North holding up that sign while looking dead at the camera. The reality star wrote in the caption, “For anyone who knows North knows how funny she finds the last slide! North I guess had it with the people taking pictures of her so she wrote on her invite STOP and held it up and wanted them to just focus on the show.” She added, “As a mom I’m so grateful that my daughter loves coming with me on my work trips and I am able to bring her and create these memories together along with my mom.” She also expressed her support for her “sweet friend” Olivier Rousteing, the Balmain creative director who collaborated on Gaultier’s latest couture collection, saying that she “couldn’t be more proud!”

Earlier this week, another video of North with her friend Ryan Romulus, the daughter of Kim’s friend and Chief Communications Officer of KKW Brands Tracy Romulus, went viral as she could be heard asking the paparazzi while walking from the hotel to the car, “Why do you have to wait for us all the time?”

This is hardly the first time North has made her displeasure with how highly-documented her family is known to the press. In 2015, when she was just two years old, another clip went viral showing her yelling “No pictures!” at the paparazzi gathered outside her ballet class. And the following year, she again requested “no pictures,” this time directed at her mom, as she attempted to hide underneath her fur coat.

And in 2019, on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, North asks, “Why are there lots of people every day taking pictures of us?” To which Kim replies, “Well, to get very technical — my name is Kim Kardashian. And daddy is Kanye West. And daddy is a singer. Performer. Artiste. And mommy has so many talents I can’t even begin to name them.”
