The Fashion and Beauty Trends to Watch for in 2021
Looking to try out a new look for the new year? We spoke with Raffaella Moda, a metro Detroit fashion stylist and image consultant, and Alissa Walker, a Kalamazoo-based makeup artist, about this year’s hot looks. Here, they predict what fashion and beauty trends will be the most popular in 2021.
Brighten Up
For spring 2021, Moda says that red and yellow will be the dominant color palettes. “These colors communicate so much energy, optimism, and positivity,” she says. “Red is the color of love and passion, while yellow is bright and cheery.” These warm tones look great separate or paired together for an eye-catching combination.
All That Glitters
Starting the new year with a little sparkle is nothing new, but Moda says that sequins will be trending all year. “A good remedy against uncertainty and sadness, glitter can be worn in any form, pants, dresses, skirts, etc.,” she says. Whether you’re looking for a small pop of shine or a head-to-toe glow, sequins will be your new best friend.
The 2021 Blues
And by blues, we mean denim. This year, Moda predicts we will see denim in all forms — dresses, jackets, overalls, suits, and even shoes. New silhouettes are also trending. “If you’re going to concentrate on a classic jean, make sure you pick a pair with a straight leg or wide leg and faded coloring,” she says.
Up, Up, and Away
Balloon sleeves trended throughout fall 2020 and will continue to make an impact this year. With these bold shoulders, Moda recommends pairing these tops with a slouchy pant. “If you’re worried about these tops giving you extra volume, choose a sheer fabric,” she says.
It’s All About the Skin
Walker says that skin will continue to play a huge part in 2021 beauty. “Dewy skin, or the no-makeup makeup look, leaves the skin looking glowing and flawless,” she says. Whether it’s ditching your full routine for a light-medium coverage CC cream or strategically placed concealer, this trend is all about enhancing your natural features.
Going Virtual
As 2021 takes off with social distancing and other COVID-19 procedures still in place, Walker recommends using downtime you may have to pick up a new skill from the comfort of your own home. “Zoom makeup lessons can help you find and master your daily makeup routine,” she says.
Bolder Brows
Enhanced brows will also continue to steal the spotlight this year. Some studios, including Walker’s, offer microblading, a semi-permanent procedure that creates hairlike strokes to mimic the look of real eyebrows. If you want a less intensive procedure, check out henna brows, a tinting process that restores the look of natural eyebrows. And of course, there are plenty of brow products that can help you achieve that perfect arch at home.
