Grimes Is Auctioning Off Her 2021 Met Gala Accessories to Raise Money for Ukraine

Grimes has found a new, altruistic use for her old Met Gala accessories.
The pop star announced that she will be selling the custom Chrishabana metal face mask and Sofia Pavlova elf ears she wore to the 2021 event as part of her Dune-inspired costume in order to help out those fleeing the war in Ukraine. Alongside a photo of herself in costume and some close up photos of the objects she wore for fashion’s biggest night, Grimes wrote on her Instagram account on Monday, “Hey guys – I’m auctioning stuff from my Met gala look last year to raise money to help get BIPOC families out of Ukraine since they’re having trouble exiting at the border.”
These two accessories are part of a much larger auction of artwork and ephemera that has all been donated to support the cause. The singer explained in her caption that her stylist Turner and HVW8 Gallery “exhibited the works of 50 distinguished artists who aim to support Emergency Response & BIPOC families (black, indigenous, and people of color) in and out of Ukraine. Each piece offers a unique interpretation of the theme ‘resistance.’ The work will simultaneously be auctioned online via the Artsy exchange. All proceeds will go to Diaspora Relief and Razom, which will use the funds to provide food, shelter, and evacuation support to those in need.”
For the Met Gala, Grimes paired both of these accessories with a look she dubbed her “best ever”—an Iris Van Herpen gown with boning and sheer detailing throughout the torso and a long black train, carrying a small, illuminated book in one hand and, in the other, a medieval-style sword she borrowed from The Met that was made out of melted-down AR-15 assault rifles. The Chrishabana x Dune Harkonnen mask has an estimated value of $1,200 and, as of publication, has a current bid of $2,750. The Sofia Pavlova “Elven Ears”, which Grimes revealed in a getting ready video with Vogue that she actually purchased off Etsy, have an estimated value of $1,500 and are currently going for just $1,100. Bidding for both will begin closing at 3:00pm EST on Thursday, May 26, 2022.
