Karen Katz, former president and CEO of Neiman Marcus Group, has joined the board of Intermix, a fashion apparel retailer based in New York with 29 stores and an e-commerce business.
After 33 years at Neiman Marcus, the last eight as CEO, Katz retired from the Dallas retailer in 2018 and stayed on the board for two more years. Among her board seats so far, Intermix is the most direct competitor to Neiman Marcus. Katz is also a director at Under Armour, The Real Real and Humana Healthcare. She has worked with several startups and private companies as an adviser.
She also chairs the board of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas.
“Intermix is well-positioned to be an industry leader, and I’m looking forward to help build the next generation of a customer-focused, multi-brand fashion retailer,” Katz said. Intermix had a store at NorthPark Center for 10 years and closed it in 2016. The store’s approach to fashion retailing is to mix established and emerging designer brands on the same rack to give shoppers personalized looks.
Intermix CEO Jyothi Rao said the retailer can leverage Katz’s “product- and customer-centric approach” to strengthen its position in the market.
Intermix was owned by Gap Inc. for a few years until last May when it was sold to private equity firm Altamont Capital Partners. Gap acquired Intermix in 2012 but later shifted its focus to its largest brands, and at the same time sold its premium children’s apparel retailer, Janie and Jack.
