I don’t necessarily like being where I am sometimes so if I can take an existential trip via a song while still doing what I need to get done in the status quo, it’s bonus. 60-Watt Kid lets me do that with their self-titled debut release available this month in various forms.

The San Francisco-based trio of ex-Dance Disaster Movement dude Kevin Litrow (vocals, guitar, etc) Derek Thomas (guitars, keyboards, samples and electronics) and Garrett Pierce (tom drum, percussion and xylophone) is yet another example of an emerging trend among young artists to marry form and function. Their live shows are more like art installations and performance with the gravy being the music, and quite good music it is. The first single from the debut release, Ocsic Narf Nas, is a personal favorite and a blend of analog and “sci fi synthesis” which goes well with pizza, beer, and an old episode of The Twilight Zone with the TV on mute. The band apparently knows what I mean admitting on their MySpace page that:

“Captain Greentree has been escorting us through the traveling doors and myopic discrepancies. We are in contact with fucked up aliens and there is no greater authority on the movement then he.”

Nice.

60-Watt kid is touring up and down the west coast through December.
